Wireless net access in hotels

Why is it that every hotel I've been in so far with "free" wireless access has had something that made that access anywhere from hard to use to unusable?

1st time - Completely hosed network... could get to the access point, but not beyond it
2nd time - Once it was working, net access was spotty and session refreshes too intrusive
3rd time (last night) - Everything worked except for the DNS server, and I couldn't get to my own

The session refreshes I'm referring to in the 2nd time were a kind of web intercept that their system did to make sure you kept their terms of service fresh on your mind (huh?). It cuts off all other network traffic until it's taken care of, and tends to happen at the most inopportune times.

Wireless net access in hotels is a cool concept but, from what I've seen so far, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. This makes me glad that I have dialup access available to me. Even if the connection has to be slower, at least it's stable.
